Following is a list of important dates in the Absolute Calendar, accurate to the nearest thousand years. (“M” is an abbreviation for “millennium.”)

Appendix B: Glossary

Absolute: see Tempo.

Apparatus: Only given name of an AI found on Earth and conscripted by the invading forces of the Returned Continuum; occasionally referred to as the “spook” or “ghost,” it has no material existence, consisting of code written via zero-dimensional topological frame defects directly into the quantum foam.

Barons: The name of the organization considered responsible for much of the unrest and sabotage endured by the Returned Continuum.

Bianca Biancotti: An Old-Timer known to Imre Bergamasc by reputation as the seed personality of the Fort “2B”; also called the “Butcher of Bresland.”

Cat’s Arse: The long-term hideout of the Corps formerly located in a spatial anomaly in Mandala Supersystem.

Continuum: The term by which the sum of human civilization is usually referred, from the fiftieth millennium on; includes all civilizations within the Milky Way and some efforts at expansion beyond.

Corps: Mercenary force founded in the 250th millennium that proved influential in the Mad Times due to its intimate dealings with the Forts, against which the Corps’ then leader, Imre Bergamasc, defiantly turned. Last-known members are: Imre Bergamasc (commander), Emlee Copas (signals), Alphin Freer (resources), Helwise MacPhedron (intelligence), and Archard Rositano (aka Render, combat specialist).

Domgard: The name of an experiment occasionally linked to the Slow Wave and Imre Bergamasc.

Dussehra: Ninth destination of Imre Bergamasc’s fourth whistle-stop tour of systems not yet aligned with the Returned Continuum.

Fort: see Tempo.

Frag: A Fort component, resembling a Prime or singleton but possessing little true individuality; a frag may be separated by light-years yet firmly connected by Q loop technology to its parent mind; Forts regard frags as functionally expendable but may display affection to particular frags in the same way that Primes keep pets or look after their hair.

Gravamen: Ruling party of Dussehra.

Hardcaster: Generic name for the expensive and power-hungry system of nonmaterial transportation preferred by Returned Continuum worlds to physical space travel. Individuals are “dematerialized” into information, transmitted via the Line or other means to their destination, then “reconstituted” on arrival.

Hyperabad: Capital city of the Hyperabadan regime; also a planet orbiting the star Chenresi; also the regime of the same name, which dominated Mandala Supersystem after the 864th millennium.

Jinc: Component of the gestalt commonly referred to as the Noh; one of seven similar components that function as far-sensing organs on the fringes of the Milky Way, searching for the source of life in the galaxy, which is presumed to be of exogenic origin.

Kismet: High-security prison of Mandala Supersystem.

Line: Common term for individual legs of the vast electromagnetic telecommunications web spanning the Milky Way.

Loop / Loop shunt: see Q loop.

Luminous: The name of an organization associated with the Slow Wave, about which little is known.

Mad Times: Major conflict spanning 550th to 722nd millennia in which non-Fort human civilizations revolted against the Milky Way’s effective rulers; ended with the defection of Imre Bergamasc during the Battle of Pelorus.
